In this computer era, everything becomes easier and simpler. When we want to communicate with our friends overseas, we don’t need to walk there for many years to meet them. Even by using handphone we can call them without leaving our room. We can also get many reference in a short time without going to book store, just by surfing on the internet. But the problem that emergence is many people become rely on this technology. Many students usually use this technology to finish their task. For example, When they have to make a research paper they will tend to use reference from internet, they will be lazy to use real book. Then there is a controversy about this problem, should students be required to use real books in research papers?

Absolutely, students should be required to use real books in research papers. They should also be required to use respectable periodicals (such as USA Today, etc.) and academic journals to complete their work. The internet has certainly changed the world, but it is not a valid substitute for stimulating one's brain by reading a book and processing the information in it. As of right now, there is little oversight of what information is posted on various websites.

While some information may be correct, there is a lot of information that is simply false. The internet encourages a student to simply copy what he or she sees on line and does little to require comparison between divergent points of view on a particular topic. I also think that relying on the internet stunts critical thinking. I taught an introductory college course several years ago and the level of the writing was ATROCIOUS to say the least. The misspelled words, erroneous sentence structure and lack of substance, both surprised and disappointed me. Several students even wrote slang, such as using the letter "u" instead of spelling out the word "you."

I believe it is because these students have been using computers since they were children and they have developed a habit of simply seeing information without really processing it. They spit out papers for the sole purpose of completing an assignment and are not interested in processing the information or relating it to their lives. I think using real books allows students to experience a much broader presentation of the information instead of just researching facts on the internet. I think reading also improves spelling and grammar skills as books and periodicals are generally written by professionals and are of a higher quality than many of the websites out there.

I definitely think using real books instead of the internet for research papers is essential. The fact that students are introduced to computers at such a young age also worries me. Students rely on the computer to think for them and I believe that as these students grow up, they will lack the ability to think and reason. I spoke to a grade school teacher who recently retired and she said that when she began teaching in the 1960's, she could give her class an assignment and they would work quietly on it in class. But in recent years when she gave the class an assignment, she was met with whines and requests for her to just "give them the answers." This is what the computer age has done to children. It has made them want everything in the time it takes to click on a computer website. They don't want to think anymore. It is very sad! Thank you!

So, they realize that young man will take over their position in the future.

As a teacher, we often hear a question "How can we discipline a child who consistently misbehaves?" This has become a serious problem recently, as schools and parents become increasingly sensitive to how children are treated in the classroom. In the past, a student might receive a slap on the wrist (literally), suspension, or expulsion. Naturally, these discipline methods accompanied problems: some simply did not work, et al kept children out of the classroom, which is counter-productive. In a large classroom in a school with only one principal, who does not have time to discipline children all day, how then can the teacher keep their class in line?

It is most crucial to determine why students act out. Most often it is a way to get attention, or a reaction to a situation in which the student sees themselves as having no control. By acting up, they make themselves the focus. And yet, in school the student should already be the focus! Thus, the best way to eliminate the need for discipline is to be sure the students understand the importance of their role in the classroom. The student should take an active part in their learning environment. The teacher should try to include the students when laying out what subjects they will cover in the year. Students can be given choice of novels to read, or have say on how they will be assessed. Obviously, there need to be limits: the teacher must cover certain materials, but this doesn't mean they cannot be flexible in responding to students desires. After all, if the students have taken part in designing their education, they've a vested interest in it and are more likely to complete assignments and try their best. If a student has helped to determine how they'll be assessed, there's a better chance that they will work diligently on their tests, essays and projects, and not leave assigments uncompleted.

Similarly, teachers should allow students at least some say in the rules of the classroom. If the teacher is willing to listen to the students concerns and compromise slightly with them, the students will clearly see that the teacher values them and their needs, and will be less likely to break rules that they themselves created. Obviously, students cannot vote that there be no penalty for missed homework, but they could generate ideas and vote on what that punishment would be. Would they rather lose 10 points, or write an additional essay the following week? Students cannot be allowed to play video games during class, but why not allow them to get up and walk around every once in a while to release some energy? This way, the students are perpetually clear on what the regulations are and why they are that way, and must be accountable for their actions.

Only so much can be accomplished by sending a kid to the office every day. Yes, this temporarily keeps the child from distracting others, but the child then misses instruction time, which can lead to further troubles. Besides, the student loses respect for the teacher if they feel the adult cannot discipline them on their own. We should do all we can to stop students acting out in the first place, and by allowing students a greater role in designing their education, we show that we respect them and expect that respect to be reciprocated. If the student feels their voice is being heard, they have no need to make it heard by being distracting or making jokes during lectures.

Once students have learned how to perform math functions on their own; the use of a calculator just speeds the process up. If the student is allowed to use the calculator too soon, they will never learn how to do the math if they forget their calculator or the batteries die.
Students still need to learn how to print and use cursive writing; before, they start to prepare papers on a computer and print them out. But, using a computer or other word processor speeds up the ability to make corrections and makes it easier for the teacher to read the final report.
To function in todays society students must be familiar with a variety of basic computer programs: word processing, databases, spreadsheets, etc. These are all skills that they will need to go on to higher education or into the work force. Teaching them these skills while they are in elementary school gives them a lead on other students.

The use of the Internet in researching information opens new horizons to students; but, it should not be allowed until after the student learns how to do research in a library.

The Internet and computer programs should not replace traditional methods of teaching; they should be used to accentuate the education process. This has been proved in schools who thought the answer to better grades was giving each child an Internet capable laptop to use in school and at home. The students grades did NOT improve; because the students were spending their time texting each other and surfing the web for personal uses. Many of the schools who tried this type of program have removed the laptops or are in the process of doing so.

Increasing the level of technology that the students are exposed to will also be beneficial. Many families cannot afford to provide their children with the latest technology and this automatically places them at a disadvantage after graduation. Having the technology available in the school and teaching them how to use it, will help them later on in life and the same equipment can be used over and over to train many students. Blackberries, bluetooth, camera phones, etc., operations and functions could all be taught to students in just a short time. The benefits of knowing how to use the technology can easily translate to real world benefits later and can open up career fields that the same student might not have considered without the technological training when they were younger.

So, as long as technology does not replace traditional teaching methods (which results in lost skills) and it is used to enhance the learning process and prepare the student for life after school; greater use of technology in elementary school can be very beneficial to students.

As a parent we often get worried with the condition of our children, especially if it has a problem relating to their education, or process of their maturity of their brain. This is a tips that I quoted from E. M. Robinson, that you can implement to your child.

You can start with you child's physician. Make sure your child has had a recent physical. Your child's physician can get you focused on your child's health status as well as the difficulties your child may be having in school. There are some categories of special education service that will require information and documentation from this doctor, so this is a good place to start.

Once your child has had an up-to-date physical and you have talked to the doctor, you can proceed with these steps.
1)Schedule a conference with your child's teacher(s). A face-to-face conference is preferable, but a telephone conference can be effective in discussing your concerns with the teachers.
2) Involve the school guidance counselor- whether this counselor attends your meeting, or you talk by phone, the guidance counselor is an important contact after you have made initial contact with the teacher(s).
3) Be open to hearing what the teacher(s) have to say. Their observations are important and it is to your advantage to have them in your corner.
4) Depending on the needs you have observed in your child, do your best to support your child's academic needs at home. Provide the environment and materials your child needs and stay involved on a daily basis with the routines that the teachers have established.
5)When the time comes, when the support from home and the teacher's increased awareness of your child's individualized needs, are not helping your child be any more successful, then ask for your child to be tested.
6)There will be paperwork for you to read, understand, and sign to start this process. The school system, with your signed permission, will get the ball rolling to assess your child in several areas.
7) Your input will be very important. Your observations, your recollection of family history, and your medical information from the doctor may all be relevant.
8) Once the evaluation is completed, summaries and detailed information from each evaluation will be provided in writing. You will be invited to an eligibility meeting to review this written information and decide on eligibility.
9) If your child is found eligible, it should be made clear to you on what basis your child was found eligible and what recommendations may have resulted from this process.
10) These professionals at the meeting will outline what happens next and you and your child will be on your way to receiving the interventions your child needs to be successful at school.
The important thing to know is that you can be the one to initiate this process. Don't sit back hoping it occurs to someone at school to suggest special education. You, the teachers, the administrators, and the related services personnel are a team.

Cluttered with ads, the main page can be difficult to navigate. At first glance, users may be confused as to where the actual templates are on Templatesland.com. There are so many other links and advertisements flashing "free templates" that the templates for this website get lost in the crowd.

To start, the home page itself is incredibly disorganized. For one, a large portion of the page is taken up by "Featured Resources" which are simply links to other template websites. Users who click on "Free Web Templates" for instance may be trying to view the templates at Templatesland.com, but instead get sent to another site. In addition, there are Google ads, page supporters, page partners, and other flashy advertisement that gets in the way of the actual templates themselves.

There are 4 steps you must do and you just need to spend the two hours and a half every day (obviously if you have more time available you can expand the time spent on each of the four steps proportionally).

First Step: Pillar Articles
Spend one hour brainstorming, researching and writing pillar articles (also called linkbaits, killer articles and so on).
Notice that your goal is to release one killer article every week. If that is not possible aim for one every 15 days. So the one hour that you will spend every day will be dedicated to the same piece. In other words, expect killers articles to take from 5 up to 10 hours of work.
If you are not familiar with the term, a killer article is nothing more than a long and structured article that has the goal of delivering a huge amount of value to potential visitors. If you have a web design blog, for example, you could write an article with “100 Free Resources for Designers”. Here are some ideas for killer articles:
• create a giant list of resources,
• write a detailed tutorial teaching people how to do something,

Remember that your goal is to build genuine relationships, so don’t approach people just because you think they can help to promote your blog. Approach them because you respect their work and because you think the two of you could grow together.

Third Step: Promotion
The first activity here is the promotion of your killer articles. Whenever you publish one of them, you should push it in any way you can. Examples include:
• letting the people in your network know about it (don’t beg for a link though),
• letting bloggers and webmasters in relevant niches know about it,
• getting some friends to submit the article to social bookmarking sites,
• getting some friends to Twitter the article, and

Fourth Step: Normal Posts

Sure there is. Many people wrote about this topic in the past, but I wanted to give my take on the issue too. I wrote those 50 ideas as they were coming to my head, as briefly as possible. Enjoy.

1. Have a big RSS icon. People are lazy. You need to keep that fact always in mind. If you use a little RSS icon, visitors might have a problem finding it. Most of those will just give up after a couple of seconds, so make sure the RSS icon is big and easily recognizable.

2. Mention that subscribing to your blog is free. It might sound strange, but many people actually get confused with the “Subscribe” terminology. I received dozens of emails over the past year from people that wanted to know if there was any cost associated with subscribing to my RSS feeds! To avoid any confusion, it could be worth mentioning that subscribing to your blog is free, so instead of “Subscribe to my RSS feed” you could use “Receive our updates for free.”

3. Display the RSS icon above the fold. Apart from using a big RSS icon, you must make sure that you display it above the fold. That is where most blogs have one, and that is where people are used to look for when they want to subscribe, so go with the flow.

4. Use words. Depending on your audience, just using an RSS icon might not be effective. If they aren’t tech-savvy, they might not know what that little orange thing is. In those cases, you can write a small message explaining that subscribing will allow them to keep updated with your posts and so on.

5. Display the RSS icon on every page of your blog. When I started blogging I did this mistake. Only my homepage used to have an RSS icon…. As soon as I added it to every single page on the blog, the number of subscribers jumped.

6. Use the FeedSmith plugin. Unless you hand code a lot of redirects on your blog, readers will still be able to subscribe to different RSS feeds provided by WordPress. This plugin will make sure that all your subscribers will be forwarded to the Feedburner feed, so that you can track them and control how your feed is formatted.

7. Offer email subscriptions. Like it or not, only a small percentage of the Internet users know about or use RSS feeds. Studies confirm that this number is below 10% around the world. Why would you want to miss the other 90% of the pie? If you use Feedburner, you just need to go on the “Publicize” tab to activate your email subscriptions.

8. Use an email subscription form. For most bloggers, an email subscription form will convert better than a simple “Subscribe via email” link. That is because Internet users are used to seeing those forms around, and typing their email address there is quite intuitive. The top of your sidebar is a good spot to place one.

9. Encourage readers to subscribe at the bottom of every post. Apart from having an RSS icon and email subscription form above the fold, it is also important to place them below each single post. Why? Because right after people finish reading your articles, they will look for something to do next, and subscribing to your blog is a good option. Additionally, if the article they just read was really good, they will be on the right mindset to subscribe and receive more of your articles in the future.

10. As few steps as possible. People are lazy (I know I mentioned it before, but it is worth re-emphasizing). The fewer the steps required for them to subscribe to your blog, the better. If you can reduce the number of clicks required, therefore, do it!

11. Use icons to offer subscription on the most popular RSS readers. One practical thing that you can do to reduce the number of steps required to subscribe to your feed is to use RSS reader specific icons (e.g., “Add to Google Reader” or “Subscribe on Bloglines”). Just analyze the most common RSS readers among your subscribers and add those icons to the sidebar.

12. Have clear focus on your blog. If you write about 10 different topics, it will be hard to convince people to subscribe to your blog. They might like your articles about technology, but they would hate to receive the house cleaning ones…. Having a clear focus is one of the most efficient ways to attract subscribers.

13. Publish new posts frequently and consistently. By frequently I mean publishing many posts per week or even per day, and by consistently I mean sticking with that frequency religiously. Those two factors will communicate to the visitors that your blog is active, and that subscribing to the RSS feed might be the best way to stay updated with it indeed.

14. Don’t exaggerate. While writing many posts per week or per day is usually a good thing, there is a limit to it. Many people mention that if a certain blog starts overwhelming them with dozens of new posts a day, they will just unsubscribe. The exceptions to this rule are the blogs on fast paced niches like gadget news.

15. Write valuable content. People will only subscribe to your RSS feed if there is some value that they can derive from it. This value might come from different different factors depending on your audience: it may come from the breaking news that you offer, from the deep analysis that you write, or from the funny things you say and so on, but it must be there.

16. Write unique content. You content might be valuable, but if people can find it elsewhere, they will have no reason to subscribe to your RSS feed. For example, suppose you copy all posts from a popular blog on your niche, say Lifehacker. You content would still be valuable, but it would not be unique, and most people would end up subscribing to the original source.

17. Don’t ramble or go off topic. If your blog has a clear focus as we suggested before, readers will subscribe to it for a very specific reason. If you then start writing about off topic stuff, it will annoy a great part of them. Just consider that a bad or unrelated post is worse than no post at all, since it might make some of your readers actually unsubscribe.

18. Use your RSS feed link when commenting on other blogs. Many bloggers have the habit of commenting on other people’s blogs. Some do it simply to join the conversation. Others because they want to promote their own blogs and generate some traffic. Either way, you can leave your RSS feed link instead of the website one to encourage people to subscribe to your feed (if you use Feedburner, they will be able to see your content anyway).

19. Run a contest. Contests are very popular on the blogosphere. If you have a somewhat popular blog, in fact, it is not difficult to raise some prizes and create one. By making subscribing to your RSS feed a requirement to participate, you could quickly boost the number of subscribers that you have. If you want to control who is going to take this action, use the email subscription method.

20. Offer random prizes to your subscribers. If you are not a fan of contests and competitions, you could always entice people to subscribe to your RSS feed by giving away random prizes. For example, if some company approaches you to donate some free copies of its product, you could in turn donate it to your subscribers

21. Write guest posts. Guest posts represent a very efficient technique for generating both brand awareness and traffic. If you guest blog on a popular blog on your same niche, there is also a good chance that a good percentage of that incoming traffic will end up subscribing to your feed.

22. Welcome the new readers. Whenever you manage to land a guest post on a really popular blog, or when you get mentioned on a larger website or mainstream site, it could be a good idea to write a specific post to welcome those readers. Use that post to describe your blog briefly, to talk a bit about yourself, and to encourage them to subscribe.

23. Go popular on social bookmarking sites. Some people say that the quality of the traffic coming from social bookmarking sites (e.g., Digg and StumbleUpon) is very low. 33. Use social proof. Ever entered into a restaurant because the place was packed with people, or didn’t enter one because it was empty? That is social proof in action. If you have a good number of RSS subscribers already (I would say over 500), you could display it on your site using the Feedburner feed count widget. This might motivate people to give your RSS feed a shot.

Angke squatters refuse to leave after eviction

Many squatters were still refusing to leave the area surrounding Angke train station in West Jakarta on Friday after their makeshift houses were destroyed by a team of police and public order officers Thursday.

The squatters were evicted from the area as part of a joint effort by state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api (PT KA) and the local administration to revitalize Jakarta's railway tracks.

Hundreds of squatters lived in the area surrounding the station before the operation, with those who have refused to leave using pieces of plywood to make temporary shelters.

During the eviction, squatters threw stones at the officers as they pushed forward and started destroying their homes. Four people were arrested in the incident, with one man caught carrying a weapon.

PT KA's head of public relations Akhmad Sujadi said 300 shacks were demolished in the operation Thursday. He said the company planed to return to the area on Jan. 22.

"We will evict those who insist on staying and might put up fences to prevent them from coming back," he said, adding that the company also planned to plant trees in the area.

On Wednesday, 210 illegal shacks underneath an elevated railway line in Cikini, Central Jakarta, were also demolished.

The city-wide railway revitalization project is being carried out to ensure the safety of train passengers, Sujadi said.

He said some squatters had built shacks as close as 20 centimeters from railway lines.

Recent reports have indicated that many Jakartans are reluctant to use the city's train services due to poor sanitation at train stations and along railway tracks.

On Saturday, PT KA will clean up the area near Juanda train station in Central Jakarta, Akhmad said.

He said the company would also focus on clearing the stretch of track between Angke and Kampung Bandan in North Jakarta as well as between Rajawali and Kemayoran in Central Jakarta.

PT KA said evicted squatters were entitled to free train trips back to their hometowns as well as Rp 100,000 (approximately US$11) if they contacted their district or subdistrict chief.

However, Akhmad said only four people had taken up the company's offer for a free train ride since the eviction.

Nasitem and Teguh, a married couple with children and grandchildren, remained on the plot of land their house used to stand on Friday.

Teguh has worked in Jakarta as a scavenger since 1973 to support the couple's five children and three grandchildren, who live in Purwokerto, Central Java.

Teguh said he would be ashamed to return to his hometown without any money, so he and his wife decided to stay in the area until they could meet with a PT KA representative.

"To be honest, if they gave me Rp 500,000 that would be enough and we would take the free ride home," he said.

Nasitem said she did not mind leaving Jakarta, but would only do so if she could take money home to her children.

"I do want to leave. I miss my children and my grandchildren, but I can't go back without any money," she said.

Usup, another evicted squatter, was not planning to leave the area in a hurry.

"I am not leaving this place. I work here and I live here. What about my furniture?" he asked. (anw)

CALCUTTA, India (AP): Health workers on Wednesday beganslaughtering hundreds of thousands of chickens after an outbreak of bird flu killed more than 35,000 birds in eastern India over the last week, officials said.

The federal government confirmed Tuesday the birds were infected with the H5 strain of bird flu, and tests were under way to determine whether it was also the dangerous N1 subtype.

No human deaths or unusual illnesses had been reported in the region, and there were no signs the disease had spread among birds in other
districts, Anisur Rahman, state minister of animal husbandry, told The Associated Press.

About 350,000 birds were being culled in affected areas in Birbhum district, 250 kilometers (160 miles) from the West Bengal state capital of Calcutta, and another 50,000 in south Dinajpur, 350 kilometers from Calcutta.

Health workers were also going door-to-door in the areas looking for people with high fevers or breathing trouble. (***)
